Sciatica: Why Your Workstation Might Be the Real Problem

Sciatica gets blamed on everything, old injuries, "wear and tear," a bad night's sleep. Rarely does anyone point at the chair. But for a huge portion of the office workers we see, the chair, the desk, and eight hours of poor sitting posture are exactly where the problem starts.
What Sciatica Actually Is
Sciatica isn't a diagnosis in itself, it's a symptom. It a pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower back through the glutes and down each leg. When something compresses or irritates that nerve, most commonly a disc bulge, but also piriformis tightness or spinal stenosis, you get the classic picture: shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness tracking down one leg, sometimes as far as the foot.
It's rarely sudden. It builds. And for desk-based workers, it builds in a very predictable way.
How Poor Ergonomics Sets It Up
Sitting loads the lumbar spine more than standing does. Sit poorly, for long enough, and you're not just uncomfortable, you're mechanically setting up nerve compression.
Slouched posture and lumbar flattening: Without proper lower back support, the natural inward curve of the lumbar spine collapses. This shifts pressure onto the front of the intervertebral discs, pushing disc material backward — toward the nerve roots that feed the sciatic nerve. This is the single biggest contributor we see.
Chair height and hip position: A seat that's too low, or a desk that forces you to sit too high relative to your hips, can compress the piriformis muscle and the sciatic nerve where it passes beneath (or in some people, through) it. Piriformis-driven sciatica is common and almost entirely posture-driven.
Monitor height forcing forward head posture: When a screen sits too low, the head drifts forward and the whole spine compensates — increasing load right down the chain to the lumbar spine.
Static sitting, full stop: Muscles that don't move don't pump blood. Discs rely on movement to stay hydrated and nourished. Eight hours of stillness a day is enough on its own to accelerate disc degeneration, regardless of how "good" the posture looks in any single frozen moment.
None of this needs a single dramatic incident. It's cumulative load, day after day, in a chair that was never set up properly in the first place.
How Good Ergonomics Fixes It
The good news: because the cause is mechanical, the fix is largely mechanical too.
Restore the lumbar curve: A chair with proper lumbar support, or a lumbar roll retrofitted to an existing chair, keeps the lower spine in its natural position and takes pressure off the front of the discs. This single change resolves a surprising amount of mild to moderate sciatic irritation.
Get hip and knee height right: Hips should sit level with or very slightly above the knees, feet flat on the floor or on a footrest. This keeps the pelvis neutral and takes the piriformis out of a compressed, shortened position for hours at a time.
Bring the monitor to eye level: Top of the screen at or just below eye height, roughly an arm's length away. This stops the forward head posture that drags the rest of the spine out of alignment with it.
Build in movement: A sit-stand desk allows for regular position changes and it is one of the most effective things you can do for disc health. Even without one, a rule of standing and moving for a few minutes every 30–45 minutes changes the load pattern enough to matter.
Set up for symmetry:Keyboard and mouse positioned so the body doesn't twist or reach. Everything used regularly within easy reach. Small correction, real cumulative effect.
